Water Conservation Essay Example for Free
Water Conservation Essay Water is an integral part of land/soil productivity. Its misuse can cause both degradation and erosion of soils. Management of water resource is considered to necessary for well being of human life as well as crop yields. There is a gap between the seasonal availability of water and its equitable supply throughout the year. Accordingly the storage of water and passage through soils is very important. It is well known that about 70% area in this country is subject to varying degree of water stress. There are areas with heavy rainfall but water problems become predominant during non-monsoon periods. It is thus a matter of concern to create a redistribution system and requirements as and when it is needed. Although there are many methods for water management, the two important methods are mentioned as follows. (I) Watershed management (II) Rainwater harvesting (I) Watershed Management : A watershed is an area bounded by the divide line of water flow so that a distinct drainage basin of any small or big water course or stream can be identified. The rain falling over this area will flow through only one point of the whole watershed. In other words, the entire area will be drained only by one stream or water course. In this way we will have definitive water resource which can be assessed and analyzed for planning for the optimum utilization through ground water, wells, tube wells, small ponds, bigger tanks or reservoirs. Watershed management is very important for rainfall and resultant run-off. More than 900 watersheds of the flood prone rivers have been identified and are at present in operation. The development of delayed through propagation of water harvesting technology is also based on the concept of micro watershed. Himalayas are one of the most critical watersheds in the world. The damage to reservoirs and irrigation systems and misused Himalayan slopes is mounting as are the costs for the control measures during the flood season every year. The vast hydroelectric power potential can be harnessed from the Himalayas watersheds on a sustainable basis. (II) Rain water Harvesting : Water harvesting technologies have established the economic and practical feasibility for inclusion in integrated watershed management plans. A numberà of such structures in the Hirakud catchment have revealed that these are desirable for protection of land, restoration of degraded land for creation of micro irrigation potential of reuse of water. This would also help in increased production based productivity for generation of employment of opportunities. The concept of watershed management has been extended to agro-industrial watersheds which take care of agro-industrial development.

Essay --
The conservative party is typically viewed as being very traditional, as well as allowing citizens to become empowered in their own life decisions. Some of the things they stand for include hoping for a long-term improvement of reducing the deficit and allowing mortgage rates to become lower than current levels (Mabbutt). They also believe in lowering income taxes to help people keep the money they worked hard to attain (Mabbutt). Some more views carried by the Conservative party include creating more jobs, more restrictions regarding welfare, and improving the school systems for the youth (Mabbutt). The views of the United Kingdoms conservative party follow the same political perspectives as many other countries around the world. When considering the Conservatives standpoint on the policy of over time, requiring businesses to pay 1.5 times a workerââ¬â¢s wage above 44 hours per week allows them to stay within their views. With this decision it will allow those that put the time into their work to receive the compensation they deserve. In Britain there is ââ¬Å"no legal right to pay for w...

Water In the Middle East: Prospects for Conflict and Cooperation Essay
Reasons and origins of the conflict for water are dating back in the late 40s and the Arab-Israeli conflict. More precisely, the countries involved that represent potential conflict are Israel and Syria, as well as Israel and Palestine. For example, what can be mentioned here are Israeli aspirations to keep tight control over the economically important areas. This is directly linked to the water issues and diverting the water from one to another region. Other Arab countries are strongly opposing such shift as this will increase Israelââ¬â¢s industrial and agricultural capacities and, consequently, will encourage further Jewish immigration to the country. There have been plans to prevent such discourse, but Israeli`s military strikes have prevented these intentions back in 1965âËâ1966 (Kershner, 2013). Even despite the fact that Israel and Jordan have settled their water disputes in the 1994 peace agreement (ibid), the water remains an important source of tension between Israel and Syria and, by default, between Israel and Lebanon. Water disputes are contributing towards failure of the peace talks between Israel and Syria in the 1990s, as well as those between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) (ibid). Many of the water resources in the peninsula have been under Israeli control and some of the construction works of the other countries have been the first significant attempts to challenge the above mentioned status quo. On the other hand, apart for the prospects for conflict, the role of the international community has been from great importance, as it is trying hard to impose a middle ground between the conflicting countries. It is clear that no final agreement is possible until there are agreed-upon borders betw... ...er. The University of Michigan, 1997. 11. Jordan Times, 1 June 1994. 12. Juusola, H. It may be to do with rarity
Why do wear the best suit (dress) when going for an important meeting or interview? Why do we make sure that we do not use a cheap perfume when going on a date? The aspect of self-indulgence is intertwined with the socially directed motives when it comes to luxury. The concept of luxury has been present in various forms since the beginning of civilization. Its role was Just as important in ancient western and eastern empires as it is in modern societies. With the clear differences between social classes in earlier civilizations, the consumption of luxury was limited to the lite classes. It also meant the definition of luxury was fairly clear. Whatever the poor cannot have and the elite can was identified as luxury. The meaning of luxury and the sorts of customers that buy luxury have continually been evolving, but never as dramatically as in the past 20 years. With more potential customers , the luxury sector is today healthier than ever ââ¬â increasing at around three times the r ate of worldwide wealth. The luxury goods industry is unique in that it is an industry that relies strictly on marketing and promotion to sell products to a specified group of people. It is also an uxury goods industry is very fascinating and the products themselves signify prestige and status. Although a select few are able to afford luxury goods, the vast majority of people who are exposed to advertisements for certain products generally have aspirations of being able to own these products someday. The theme of this course paper is really topical nowadays, because each luxury brand takes care about its image, performance, and service in order to attract more and more customers and to gain customers loyalty. The success of each company depends mostly on clients, so to develop the business successfully each company has o care a lot about marketing aspects and to use various marketing methods of attracting new customers. The purpose of this course paper is to explore which methods of w inning customers attention are more effective. Accordingly, the main objective is to study the major methods of attracting clients on the examples of the leading luxury fashion companies and to analyze their sales volume. The course paper is divided into two parts. The first part is called ââ¬Å"Fashion industry and the place of marketing in itâ⬠and it tells about what is called luxury in general, about the global market of luxury goods and methods of attracting more and more ustomers. The second part of the course paper is called ââ¬Å"The analysis of marketing methods of major luxury fashion brandsâ⬠, where the analysis of the major luxury brands has been made ââ¬â Burberry group, Gucci group and LVMH, including the statistics, the methods of customer attraction, some key steps to success of each. . Fashion industry and the place of marketing in it 1. 1 . Getting to know luxury Although the term ââ¬Å"luxury productsâ⬠is broadly defined and therefore basical ly comprehensible, it still needs to be operationalized because it is not yet clear which products are actually ââ¬Å"more than necessary and ordinary compared to the other roducts of their category. â⬠The broad definition of luxury products can be modified and further specified by an operational definition. For this purpose, adequate indicators for a term need to be determined. According to the dimensional analysis, it was decided to operationalize luxury products by their characteristics. The operationalization relies on a literature analysis and an empirical study. The results suggest that consumers perceive that luxury products have six major characteristics including price, quality, aesthetics, rarity, extraordinariness and symbolism. In that ay, the operationalization helps to decide for most products if they are part of what is meant by the term ââ¬Å"luxury productâ⬠. The definition of luxury products can be summarized as: Luxury products have more than necessary and ordinary characteristics compared to other products of their category, which include their relatively high level of price, quality, aesthetics, rarity, extraordinariness, and competences of creativity, exclusivity, craftsmanship, precision, high quality, innovation and premium pricing. These product attributes give the consumers the satisfaction of not only owning expensive items but the extra-added psychological enefits like esteem, prestige and a sense of a high status that reminds them and others that they belong to an exclusive group of only a select few, who can afford these pricey items. The luxury sector targets its products and services at consumers on the top-end of the wealth spectrum. These self-selected elite is more or less price insensitive and choose to spend their time and money on objects that are plainly opulence rather than necessities. For these reasons, luxury and prestige brands have for centuries commanded an unwavering and often illogical customer loyalty. Luxury as never been something easy to define, yet this mystery concept is something highly desired by one and all alike. Delving deeper into this mystery and aura of luxury goods by way of comparing them against ââ¬Ëregular goods' as well as highlighting the characteristics of the luxury industry. Luxury products and brands can be distinguished from the premium segment by their constitutive characteristics. The major characteristics can be considered as dimensions ranging from a minimum level that is also necessary for non-luxury brands to a maximum level that corresponds to the highest form of luxury. As demonstrated in the table below, premium brands rate higher on these dimensions than medium-level brands, but still well below luxury brands. While premium brands still remain down-to-earth and cannot lose sight of the value-for-money ratio, luxury brands are reaching exceedingly reasonable levels in the major luxury dimensions, and some of them even work on topping the current top-of-top luxury level.

Foundation and Empire 4. The Emperor
CLEON II commonly called ââ¬Å"The Great.â⬠The last strong Emperor of the First Empire, he is important for the political and artistic renaissance that took place during his long reign. He is best known to romance, however, for his connection with Bel Riose, and to the common man, he is simply ââ¬Å"Riose's Emperor.â⬠It is important not to allow events of the last year of his reign to overshadow forty years ofâ⬠¦ Encyclopedia Galactica Cleon II was Lord of the Universe. Cleon II also suffered from a painful and undiagnosed ailment. By the queer twists of human affairs, the two statements are not mutually exclusive, nor even particularly incongruous. There have been a wearisomely large number of precedents in history. But Cleon II cared nothing for such precedents. To meditate upon a long list of similar cases would not ameliorate personal suffering an electron's worth. It soothed him as little to think that where his great-grandfather had been the pirate ruler of a dust-speck planet, he himself slept in the pleasure palace of Ammenetik the Great, as heir of a line of Galactic rulers stretching backward into a tenuous past. It was at present no source of comfort to him that the efforts of his father had cleansed the realm of its leprous patches of rebellion and restored it to the peace and unity it had enjoyed under Stanel VI; that, as a consequence, in the twenty-five years of his reign, not one cloud of revolt had misted his burnished glory. The Emperor of the Galaxy and the Lord of All whimpered as he lolled his head backward into the invigorating plane of force about his pillows. It yielded in a softness that did not touch, and at the pleasant tingle, Cleon relaxed a bit. He sat up with difficulty and stared morosely at the distant walls of the grand chamber. It was a bad room to be alone in. It was too big. All the rooms were too big. But better to be alone during these crippling bouts than to endure the prinking of the courtiers, their lavish sympathy, their soft, condescending dullness. Better to be alone than to watch those insipid masks behind which spun the tortuous speculations on the chances of death and the fortunes of the succession. His thoughts hurried him. There were his three sons; three straight-backed youths full of promise and virtue. Where did they disappear on these bad days? Waiting, no doubt. Each watching the other; and all watching him. He stirred uneasily. And now Brodrig craved audience. The low-born, faithful Brodrig; faithful because he was hated with a unanimous and cordial hatred that was the only point of agreement between the dozen cliques that divided his court. Brodrig ââ¬â the faithful favorite, who had to be faithful, since unless he owned the fastest speed-ship in the Galaxy and took to it the day of the Emperor's death, it would be the radiation-chamber the day after. Cleon II touched the smooth knob on the arm of his great divan, and the huge door at the end of the room dissolved to transparency. Brodrig advanced along the crimson carpet, and knelt to kiss the Emperor's limp hand. ââ¬Å"Your health, sire?â⬠asked the Privy Secretary in a low tone of becoming anxiety. ââ¬Å"I live,â⬠snapped the Emperor with exasperation, ââ¬Å"if you can call it life where every scoundrel who can read a book of medicine uses me as a blank and receptive field for his feeble experiments. If there is a conceivable remedy, chemical, physical, or nuclear, which has not yet been tried, why then, some learned babbler from the far comers of the realm will arrive tomorrow to try it. And still another newly-discovered book, or forgery morelike, will be used as authority. ââ¬Å"By my father's memory,â⬠he rumbled savagely, ââ¬Å"it seems there is not a biped extant who can study a disease before his eyes with those same eyes. There is not one who can count a pulse-beat without a book of the ancients before him. I'm sick and they call it ââ¬Ëunknown.' The fools! If in the course of millennia, human bodies learn new methods of falling askew, it remains uncovered by the studies of the ancients and uncurable forevermore. The ancients should be alive now, or I then.â⬠The Emperor ran down to a low-breathed curse while Brodrig waited dutifully. Cleon II said peevishly, ââ¬Å"How many are waiting outside?â⬠He jerked his head in the direction of the door. Brodrig said patiently, ââ¬Å"The Great Hall holds the usual number.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, let them wait. State matters occupy me. Have the Captain of the Guard announce it. Or wait, forget the state matters. Just have it announced I hold no audience, and let the Captain of the Guard look doleful. The jackals among them may betray themselves.â⬠The Emperor sneered nastily. ââ¬Å"There is a rumor, sire,â⬠said Brodrig, smoothly, ââ¬Å"that it is your heart that troubles you.â⬠The Emperor's smile was little removed from the previous sneer. ââ¬Å"It will hurt others more than myself if any act prematurely on that rumor. But what is it you want. Let's have this over.â⬠Brodrig rose from his kneeling posture at a gesture of permission and said, ââ¬Å"It concerns General Bel Riose, the Military Governor of Siwenna.â⬠ââ¬Å"Riose?â⬠Cleon II frowned heavily. ââ¬Å"I don't place him. Wait, is he the one who sent that quixotic message some months back? Yes, I remember. He panted for permission to enter a career of conquest for the glory of the Empire and Emperor.â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly, sire.â⬠The Emperor laughed shortly. ââ¬Å"Did you think I had such generals left me, Brodrig? He seems to be a curious atavism. What was the answer? I believe you took care of it.â⬠ââ¬Å"I did, sire. He was instructed to forward additional information and to take no steps involving naval action without further orders from the Imperium.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hmp. Safe enough. Who is this Riose? Was he ever at court?â⬠Brodrig nodded and his mouth twisted ever so little. ââ¬Å"He began his career as a cadet in the Guards ten years back. He had part in that affair off the Lemul Cluster.â⬠ââ¬Å"The Lemul Cluster? You know, my memory isn't quite ââ¬â Was that the time a young soldier saved two ships of the line from a head-on collision byâ⬠¦ uhâ⬠¦ something or other?â⬠He waved a hand impatiently. ââ¬Å"I don't remember the details. It was something heroic.â⬠ââ¬Å"Riose was that soldier. He received a promotion for it,â⬠Brodrig said dryly, ââ¬Å"and an appointment to field duty as captain of a ship.â⬠ââ¬Å"And now Military Governor of a border system and still young. Capable man, Brodrig!â⬠ââ¬Å"Unsafe, sire. He lives in the past. He is a dreamer of ancient times, or rather, of the myths of what ancient times used to be. Such men are harmless in themselves, but their queer lack of realism makes them fools for others.â⬠He added, ââ¬Å"His men, I understand, are completely under his control. He is one of your popular generals.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is he?â⬠the Emperor mused. ââ¬Å"Well, come, Brodrig, I would not wish to be served entirely by incompetents. They certainly set no enviable standard for faithfulness themselves.â⬠ââ¬Å"An incompetent traitor is no danger. It is rather the capable men who must be watched.â⬠ââ¬Å"You among them, Brodrig?â⬠Cleon II laughed and then grimaced with pain. ââ¬Å"Well, then, you may forget the lecture for the while. What new development is there in the matter of this young conqueror? I hope you haven't come merely to reminisce.â⬠ââ¬Å"Another message, sire, has been received from General Riose.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh? And to what effect?â⬠ââ¬Å"He has spied out the land of these barbarians and advocates an expedition in force. His arguments are long and fairly tedious. It is not worth annoying Your Imperial Majesty with it at present, during your indisposition. Particularly since it will be discussed at length during the session of the Council of Lords.â⬠He glanced sidewise at the Emperor. Cleon II frowned. ââ¬Å"The Lords? Is it a question for them, Brodrig? It will mean further demands for a broader interpretation of the Charter. It always comes to that.â⬠ââ¬Å"It can't be avoided, sire. It might have been better if your august father could have beaten down the last rebellion without granting the Charter. But since it is here, we must endure it for the while.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're right, I suppose. Then the Lords it must be. But why all this solemnity, man? It is, after all, a minor point. Success on a remote border with limited troops is scarcely a state affair.â⬠Brodrig smiled narrowly. He said coolly, ââ¬Å"It is an affair of a romantic idiot; but even a romantic idiot can be a deadly weapon when an unromantic rebel uses him as a tool. Sire, the man was popular here and is popular there. He is young. If he annexes a vagrant barbarian planet or two, he will become a conqueror. Now a young conqueror who has proven his ability to rouse the enthusiasm of pilots, miners, tradesmen and suchlike rabble is dangerous at any time. Even if he lacked the desire to do to you as your august father did to the usurper, Ricker, then one of our loyal Lords of the Domain may decide to use him as his weapon.â⬠Cleon II moved an arm hastily and stiffened with pain. Slowly he relaxed, but his smile was weak, and his voice a whisper. ââ¬Å"You are a valuable subject, Brodrig. You always suspect far more than is necessary, and I have but to take half your suggested precautions to be utterly safe. We'll put it up to the Lords. We shall see what they say and take our measure accordingly. The young man, I suppose, has made no hostile moves yet.â⬠ââ¬Å"He report none. But already he asks for reinforcements.â⬠ââ¬Å"Reinforcements!â⬠The Emperor's eyes narrowed with wonder. ââ¬Å"What force has he?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ten ships of the line, sire, with a full complement of auxiliary vessels. Two of the ships are equipped with motors salvaged from the old Grand Fleet, and one has a battery of power artillery from the same source. The other ships are new ones of the last fifty years, but are serviceable, nevertheless.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ten ships would seem adequate for any reasonable undertaking. Why, with less than ten ships my father won his first victories against the usurper. Who are these barbarians he's fighting?â⬠The Privy Secretary raised a pair of supercilious eyebrows. ââ¬Å"He refers to them as ââ¬Ëthe Foundation.'â⬠ââ¬Å"The Foundation? What is it?â⬠ââ¬Å"There is no record of it, sire. I have searched the archives carefully. The area of the Galaxy indicated falls within the ancient province of Anacreon, which two centuries since gave itself up to brigandage, barbarism, and anarchy. There is no planet known as Foundation in the province, however. There was a vague reference to a group of scientists sent to that province just before its separation from our protection. They were to prepare an Encyclopedia.â⬠He smiled thinly. ââ¬Å"I believe they called it the Encyclopedia Foundation.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well,â⬠the Emperor considered it somberly, ââ¬Å"that seems a tenuous connection to advance.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not advancing it, sire. No word was ever received from that expedition after the growth of anarchy in that region. If their descendants still live and retain their name, then they have reverted to barbarism most certainly.â⬠ââ¬Å"And so he wants reinforcements.â⬠The Emperor bent a fierce glance at his secretary. ââ¬Å"This is most peculiar; to propose to fight savages with ten ships and to ask for more before a blow is struck. And yet I begin to remember this Riose; he was a handsome boy of loyal family. Brodrig, there are complications in this that I don't penetrate. There may be more importance in it than would seem.â⬠His fingers played idly with the gleaming sheet that covered his stiffened legs. He said, ââ¬Å"I need a man out there; one with eyes, brains and loyalty. Brodrig-ââ¬Å" The secretary bent a submissive head. ââ¬Å"And the ships, sire?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not yet!â⬠The Emperor moaned softly as he shifted his position in gentle stages. He pointed a feeble finger, ââ¬Å"Not till we know more. Convene the Council of Lords for this day week. It will be a good opportunity for the new appropriation as well. I'll put that through or lives will end.â⬠He leaned his aching head into the soothing tingle of the force-field pillow, ââ¬Å"Go now, Brodrig, and send in the doctor. He's the worst bumbler of the lot.ââ¬
